| Research Article Proposal by Michael Kroeger |
| What is the project? The purpose of the project is to consider the apparent conflict between formal, aesthetic, social and political, and contextual properties in graphic design and communication. The research has three phases. The first is an in-depth investigation of the problems involved in graphic design education. The second phase involves interviewing experts in the field. The final phase is the publication of the findings on the Internet.
Problem definition and interview Thomas Ockerse investigates design based semiotics (sign interpretation). His work in teaching, the "Visible Language Journal" and other publications describe the need for semiotics in design education (Semiotica). Gordon Salchow is the expert in higher education and professional aesthetics based graphic design. He has published work is in numerous design magazines and books such as "Looking Closer." Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl, the editor of "Visible Language Journal" and professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), writes extensively on the communication aspects (content and context) of graphic design. Shiela deBretteville of Yale University writes and lectures on social and political influences in graphic design. Lorraine Wild of California Institute of the Arts, is also very active in this area.
Publication and conclusion I base the content of the article on my current research involving undergraduate design education in the university setting. The published work involves advanced techniques and implementation on the computer and its effect on fundamental design education. I published the article "Paul Rand: Graphic Designer" in the 1995 Spring "AIGA Phoenix Journal" as a classroom interview session with Paul Rand. The research article "Graphic Design Education Fundamentals" concerns design education. This research is the beginning point for my investigation. |
