The ACD Mission Statement ADC's web page states: "The American Center for Design is a nonprofit national membership organization that serves the needs of designers of all disciplines, and disseminates information on the value of design to a more general audience. ACD's mission is to educate and inform design professionals about current research, ideas, and technology that affect design; to support excellence in design education; to educate the business community about the strategic value of design; and to build public awareness of design's role in shaping our culture and economy. In order to accomplish this, we publish magazines, journals and books, hold conferences and workshops for professionals, educators, and students, and sponsor other activities and projects." The 1988 STA Membership Directory states: "ACD regularly provides opportunities for the business community and the public to attend exhibits and events which present current developments in design and demonstrate the fact that good design is not only good for business, but a vital part of our public environment. Since its founding in 1927 as the Society of Typographic Arts, ACD has fostered excellence in design practice. It has brought to the design community and the public examples of the value of design, its function as a form of dynamic visual language, and an awareness of the overall role design plays in shaping our culture.
