Step one. Guitar kit arrives from Martin Guitar Nazareth, PA. The end blocks are glued in first to stabilize the curved rosewood. These side pieces are pre-cut and bent at the factory. All materials are included except your choice of finishing materials. I'll talk about that later.
Step two. I got a sheet of 3/4" plywood from Home Depot in Arizona and drilled some holes around the outside of the guitar shape to help it keep its form. Another way is to make a more stable form from 2 pieces of plywood. I think that would work to keep the sides parallel.
Step three. Here the back two pieces of book-matched rosewood have been attached with the decorative wooden strip in-between. I had to make these clamps from 7" carriage bolts and 1" dowel rods (with the centers drilled out). This new piece of plywood is used to keep the middle section of the guitar the proper width according to the blueprint. As you can see I am working in my living room in my Arizona apartment. (Oh the wife is going to kill me!) The WorkMate 550 is a new addition to the living room and very attractive. |
